I don’t know whether to be sad or angry — or both. The recent exposé of the fact that Herman Rosenblat’s Holocaust memoir is a hoax was no surprise to me. From the first time I heard the story of his "miraculous" survival during the Nazi era, I doubted that it could be true.

Rosenblat’s claim that, as an inmate in a Buchenwald sub-camp, he had survived because a young girl had tossed an apple over the fence each day for seven months just did not seem credible to me.
The notion that a concentration camp inmate could approach the fence without the SS shooting him beggared the imagination. I could not believe that a little girl whose family was supposedly passing as non-Jews would allow their daughter to engage in such an act.

The outspoken basketball commentator took blood and field tests but balked at a breath test, police say.Barkley ‘disappointed’ after DUI arrest
Basketball commentator and former hoops star Charles Barkley was arrested Wednesday in Scottsdale, Arizona, on suspicion of drunken driving, a police spokesman said.

Barkley issued a brief statement, saying, "I am disappointed that I put myself in that situation. The Scottsdale police were fantastic. I will not comment any further as it is a legal matter."
Lt. Eric Shuhandler of the Gilbert Police Department said an officer pulled Barkley over after he ran a stop sign in Scottsdale’s Old Town area, a trendy spot known for its nightclubs and bars. Gilbert and Scottsdale are in the Phoenix metro area.

The nation’s largest public utility has promised to do whatever it takes to clean a massive coal sludge spill in central Tennessee, Gov. Phil Bredesen said Wednesday.

The governor met with several families whose homes became uninhabitable after the December 26 spill, which unleashed enough sludge to fill 1,660 Olympic-size swimming pools.
"They’re obviously concerned about being made whole in some way. They love the place they live. … They know they’re not going to be able to live there again, " Bredesen said after touring the site.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert vowed Wednesday that Israel’s air assault on Gaza would not end until Hamas militants quit firing rockets into Israeli territory.

"We did not enter this operation in order to end it with the firing still continuing," Olmert said in a security cabinet meeting, according to a senior government official.
"Hamas broke this cease-fire," Olmert said. "If the conditions ripen" and if there is a solution "that promises a better security … we will consider it, but we are not there yet," he said, according to the official.

Baffled consumers are griping about a mysterious glitch that appeared to cause thousands of Zune music players to simultaneously stop working late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

Internet message boards have been flooded with complaints about Zune’s 30GB models freezing, prompting Y2K-like speculation about end-of-year hardware or software problems.
"It seems that every Zune on the planet has just frozen up and will not work," posted a Mountain Home, Idaho, user on CNN’s iReport.com. "I have 3 and they all in the same night stopped working."
