African-American scholar and Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. was arrested last week on a charge of disorderly conduct after a confrontation with an officer at his home, according to a Cambridge, Massachusetts, police report.

According to the report, officers responded to a call Thursday from a woman who said she saw "a man wedging his shoulder into the front door" at Gates’ house near the university. The report, obtained by CNN affiliate WCVB-TV, indicates Gates refused to identify himself to a police officer, claiming the officer was a racist.
Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge Police Department stated in the report that he told Gates he was investigating a report of a break-in at the residence. According to the report, Gates "opened the front door and exclaimed, ‘Why, because I’m a black man in America?’ "

  2. 1. If Professor Gates were a white man, he would not be arrested. He would be helped by the officers (obviously white officers)
    2. If Professor Gates were a white man, call to police probably would not be made. Rather help would be offered.
    3. What happened to Professor Gates unfortunately happens to Blacks throughout the country.
    4. How many times have there been reports of Black Police Officers harassing, arresting, or killing White people? Rarely, if ever. It is always White Officers do these to Black people
    5. Many White Police Officers are using their office to perpetrate racism and this has to be investigated and stopped. Unfortunately the success of any such investigation is small since most of the investigators are whites and who knows how many of them are racists?
    5. What happened to Professor Gates should make both Whites and Blacks upset and if I were a White man, I would be more upset as this indicates viciousness, craziness, heartlessness, racism and animalistic tendencies in a White race.
    6. Many white police officers would arrest their Black chief or supervisor if they can get away with it!
    7. Those who want to believe that having a Black man as the president would mean decrease in racism do not understand what racism is. In fact, having a Black man as a President would increase racism in many Whites. After all cities where Blacks are mayors continuously record high incidents of racism. Same is in a business in which the CEO is a Black person.
    8. Many Black men are in jail simply becaus of the color of their skins. Most of the crimes committed by these black men and women are committed by white men and women but the police and legal authorities look the other way.

Many white people have moved beyond racism and associated prejudice, but many remain racist and unfortunately would die racist. That US would go around the world to fight injustice and related crimes but would ignore the racism and injustice committed by police officers against innocent Black people simply because of the color of their skins is sad! This needs to stop. This is a national disgrace and requires sincere and dedicated approach.

  4. This had nothing to do with black or white. The police responded to a 911 call that someone was breaking into a house. When the officer arrived, he saw a man just inside the front door. The officer asked for id, and the man refused. He also refused to come outside, which was a perfectly reasonable expectation of the officer because 1) If the man were the burglar, then it would be best to get him outside where the lone policeman could effect an arrest or 2) If he were the homeowner, the burglar(s) may still be in the home. In any case, Gates should have thanked the officer for checking on his home, provided id, and then went about his day. But no, he had to be the big bad professor and yell at the policeman, refuse to cooperate, and generally cause a nuisance.

White or black, he should have been arrested. I’m sorry the city has back down with its tail between its legs by dropping the charges. I’m sorry Obama weighed in on the subject before he had all the facts. I’m also sorry that Obama played the race card here. My opinion of him dropped considerably today. Not only did I vote for Obama, but I campaigned for him, gave a substantial sum to his campaign, and have supported him until today. Today, he showed that he is just another politician looking for easy votes, not the statesman I thought he was.

I’m sorry I voted for him.

  6. This is not a poor black kid pulled over and beaten. His neighbors reported a burglar, the cops showed up and asked for ID any White or Asian would give ID…
He was locked out and angry, the cops probably had a bad day too. When you have
a neighbor report a burglar, You show ID. White, black or green…You say yes sir and no sir and the police should say sir as well…Did they beat him?NO he isn’t poor.Did
they charge him with a piddly charge for being belligerent, like he was rich or White?
Yes, they did!! This isn’t what poor black people are dealing with…As for OBAMA, he is correct that it was “STUPID” to charge him. He is rich, black and POWERFUL.
Both sides should apologize to America and to poor black men who do not have a voice and who DO get BEAT UP…”Can we all just get along?” Who is this neighbor
that sees a burglary, yet doesn’t know what their black neighbor looks like?Hmmm?

  8. The situation was badly handled by the police since once he had shown that the house was his lawful residence the entire matter should have come to a stop.

It is to be expected a fustrated individual as the professor must have been after his problem with the door wourl not have been in the best of mood, that is only human nature, not disorderly – police should be trained to recognize the obvious.

Note: I am white, not black.

  10. I don’t care if the man is middle age, black, is using a walking cane or what. The police was responding to a breaking and entering call and he should have treated them with respect instead of opening his big foul mouth claiming racism and acussing the officer of having sex with his mother. This guy is supposed to be a reknown and respected African American studies professor in Harvard! This man is a racist leftist elitist who has been spoiled by Harvard into thinking that he is God’s gift to the world. I think the police did the right thing by hauling him to jail and in addition they should have slapped him silly. Dumb ass! And the President is another dumb ass for acting stupidly when he didn’t have all the facts.
