It is a problem of massive plastic proportions — a giant floating debris field, composed mostly of bits and pieces of plastic, in the northwest Pacific Ocean, about a thousands miles off the coast of California.

It’s called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and it covers a vast area of hundreds, maybe even thousands, of miles of open ocean.
Now researchers are trying to learn more about the sea-bound trash zone and perhaps find answers to basic questions.

  2. Forget studying it! Get some trawlers out there equipped with special nets and start cleaning! I realize this would be a HUGE undertaking, and probably very expensive, but GreenPeace, or the NOAA should be able to divert some funds and take care of this

  4. We need to focus more energy and resources on issues like this. Clean up idea – The creation of a huge floating platform that is equipped with solar powered filtration system. The giant barge can drift with the garbage patch. Fix the problem – we need find more eco friendly alternatives to plastics and other petroleum based products – start by eliminating corporate lobbyists in our government and force the politicians to work for the people.
