For three minutes, the most frightened people in the world may have been the crew and passengers aboard US Airways Flight 1549 as the plane headed for a splashdown in the Hudson River.

But for the next half-hour, that unwelcome distinction may have gone to Patrick Harten, the air traffic controller who communicated with Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and then watched Flight 1549 disappear from his radar screen.
"It was the lowest low I had ever felt," Harten, a controller of 10 years, said in testimony prepared for a congressional hearing Tuesday. It is Harten’s first public appearance since the crash. He will appear alongside the Flight 1549 crew.

One person credits bad weather and the other a long line.

Those are the reasons two would-be passengers did not fly on Continental Connection Flight 3407, which crashed Thursday outside Buffalo, killing all 49 people aboard and one on the ground.
"It could have been me," David Becony said in an interview from his home in Springville, New York, as he watched television reports on the crash and its fiery aftermath. "My wife would have been with all those families" who had loved ones on the plane.

The next time you land safely in Seattle, you may want to thank Steve Osmek.

He’s the wildlife biologist whose job is to make sure that birds don’t get in the way of airplanes arriving and departing Seattle Tacoma International Airport.
Even though the bird strikes that recently caused US Airways Flight 1549 to lose both engines and land in New York’s Hudson River has brought greater urgency to the issue, the danger presented by avian life is nothing new to Sea-Tac. The airport has had a wildlife biologist on staff since the 1970s, Osmek says, and annually spends about $250,000 on bird-removal operations.

Two days before US Airways Flight 1549 crashed into the Hudson River, passengers on the same route and same aircraft say they heard a series of loud bangs and the flight crew told them they could have to make an emergency landing, CNN has learned.

Steve Jeffrey of Charlotte, North Carolina, told CNN he was flying in first class Tuesday when, about 20 minutes into the flight, "it sounded like the wing was just snapping off."
"The red lights started going on. A little pandemonium was going on," Jeffrey recalled.
