Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin said Wednesday that a Senate ethics panel is investigating Sen. Roland Burris after his disclosure that he had spoken with the brother of Rod Blagojevich about raising money for the disgraced former governor while seeking appointment to the Senate.

Durbin’s comments came shortly before Rep. Phil Hare, a Democrat from western Illinois, became the first member of Congress to publicly call on Burris to step down, describing the ongoing Blagojevich saga as "a recurring nightmare."
"Given this latest revelation, I believe it is in the best interest of all Illinoisans that Senator Burris resigns," Hare said in a statement. "Our state and its citizens deserve the whole truth, not bits and pieces only when it is convenient."

Workers at the Illinois Capitol building wasted little time Thursday night changing the face of state government, shortly after Gov. Pat Quinn replaced the ousted Rod Blagojevich.

The Illinois Senate voted 59-0 on Thursday to remove Blagojevich from office. Moments later, the Illinois Senate voted unanimously to prevent Blagojevich from ever holding political office in the state again.
After the Senate vote, the "welcome" sign with Blagojevich’s face, which visitors saw as they entered the Capitol in Springfield, was quickly brought down.

New Gov. Patrick Quinn says he hopes "to restore the faith of the people of Illinois."Lieutenant governor replaces Blagojevich
It wasn’t long after the Illinois state Senate voted unanimously to remove Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich from office that Lt. Gov. Patrick Quinn put his hand on a Bible and took the oath of office to replace him.

Quinn, a 60-year-old tax attorney, has spent most of the last 27 years in public office. On Thursday, he took up his greatest challenge yet.
"In this moment our hearts are hurt," Quinn said after the swearing in. "It is very important that all of us understand that we have a duty, a mission, to restore the faith of the people of Illinois in the integrity of our government and to make sure that all of our elected officials have the confidence of the voters.

After avoiding his impeachment trial since it began, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich will deliver a closing argument Thursday to senators.

Illinois state senators, who will decide whether to oust him from office, granted Blagojevich permission on Thursday to speak before the Senate.
Speaking outside the state Senate to reporters, Blagojevich said he wants to "clear his name and restore the public trust."
