As coalition and Afghan forces entered the second week of a major offensive against the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, the head of U.S. Central Command warned that the potential loss of lives among U.S. forces in the operation "will be tough."

What Makes The US Military So Sure That The Afghan Tribes Will Cooperate In The Fight Against Extremism?


General David Petraeus recently came out with the idea to use the tribes in Afghanistan to fight against the Taliban in much the same way that the Sunni Muslims in Iraq were used to fight against the insurgency and Al Qaeda In Iraq.

The situation is extremely different in Afghanistan than in Iraq, so, what makes the US military so sure that the Afghan tribes will cooperate in the fight against extremism (the Taliban and Al Qaeda)?
What do you think makes them sure?
The members of Al Qaeda are Arabs.
The members of the Taliban are Afghans and Pakistanis.

According to the tribal Pashtun ideas, one must be willing to defend their honored guests until death. This is why they are defending Al Qaeda. Osama Bin Laden fought in the Afghan-Soviet war between 1980-1989, he helped organize the incoming people and weapons, he built construction projects for the Afghans during the war and helped the incoming fighters get comfortable with the area.

He came back to Afghanistan as an honored guest unfortunately for the US.

As President Obama awaits formal recommendations this month on issues surrounding the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, it is crucial that policymakers and the public have an accurate picture of the threat to the United States posed by those detainees already released.

Contrary to recent assertions that one in seven, or 14 percent, of the former prisoners had "returned to the battlefield," our analysis of Pentagon reports, news stories and other public records indicates that the number who were confirmed or suspected to be involved in anti-U.S. violence is closer to one in 25, or 4 percent.
During his first week in office, Obama signed an executive order directing that the Guantanamo prison be closed by January 22, 2010, and suspending the system of military commissions that existed to deal with detainees in what the Bush administration termed the war on terror.

President Obama arrives at the White House on Monday after a weekend in Chicago, llinois.Automakers look to Obama administration for additional help
General Motors Corp. and Chrysler will submit detailed restructuring plans Tuesday, while the White House is expected to decide on whether to free up billions more in bailout dollars.

President Obama will release $4 billion more in loans to keep GM afloat, an Obama official and a company official confirm. But the automaker already was expecting that money as part of a commitment the Bush administration made in December.
The more important question is whether GM and Chrysler can deliver viability plans to the Obama administration and convince it that they can survive long term and deserve more government cash down the road.
