Secretary of State Hillary Clinton meets with Gillibrand, right, her successor.Paterson: ‘No signal from me’ for Kennedy to quit Senate effort
New York Gov. David Paterson said Sunday that Caroline Kennedy received "no signal from me that she had to withdraw" from her campaign to fill Hillary Clinton’s vacant U.S. Senate.

Appearing at a news conference with the person he picked to fill that seat — Democratic Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand of Hudson in upstate New York — Paterson briefly answered reporters’ questions about the Kennedy withdrawal, saying the decision was entirely hers.
"Caroline Kennedy called me on Wednesday to inform me that for personal reasons she had to withdraw," Paterson said.

Caroline Kennedy withdrew her name from consideration for Hillary Clinton's Senate seat.Confusion, dissent over New York Senate pick
The political circus surrounding the selection of New York’s next senator is over — at least for the next two years.

On Friday, New York Gov. David Paterson, a Democrat, appointed Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to serve the remaining Senate term of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Paterson had the task of choosing among at least 10 people for the job. The list included New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and Caroline Kennedy.

Will Senate Democrats Flip Flop On The Caroline Kennedy Appointment Just Like They Are On Roland Burris?

They pledged almost unanimously to oppose anyone Hot Rod appointed, and then along with Obama, did a 180 in near lockstep once Burris was announced.

Now it appears that Governor Paterson is violating New York State Law by the secretive process he is using to select Hillary's replacement in the Senate.

Should they make a big show of demanding that Hillary's successor be selected on the up-and-up, even if they recant it later and give Caroline the ultimate rubber stamp of approval?
"ALBANY, N.Y. – Gov. David Paterson's secretive process to select Hillary Rodham Clinton's successor in the U.S. Senate conflicts with his campaign promises to open up government, and New York's top regulator of open government laws says it appears to violate state law."

Caroline Kennedy, who was widely considered the front-runner for an appointment to replace Hillary Clinton as U.S. senator from New York, will remove herself from consideration for that post, according to three Democratic sources.

Sources told CNN that, as of about 8 p.m. Wednesday, she had not yet informed New York Gov. David Paterson of her decision. And as the evening wore on, confusion still surrounded the situation — sources telling CNN they were unsure of exactly where the decision stood.
The 51-year-old daughter of President John F. Kennedy indicated her interest in filling the seat after Clinton was nominated to be U.S. secretary of state.
