In the fight against obesity, doctors have deployed stern warnings, dieting tips, liposuction and open-incision bariatric surgery. But some surgeons have found another avenue for weight loss.

A handful of surgeons are using natural orifices — such as the mouth or the vagina — to perform bariatric surgery, which reduces stomach size.
Surgical instruments and a tiny camera travel through the patients’ natural body openings to reach the desired organ in the procedure, known as natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery. In the bariatric procedure, the surgeon trims the stomach to a smaller size or stitches a slight pouch in it to make the patient feel full after a modest meal.

On his final full day in office, President Bush issued commutations for two former U.S. Border Patrol agents convicted in 2006 of shooting and wounding an unarmed illegal immigrant — suspected of drug smuggling at the time — and then covering it up.

The prison sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean will now end March 20.
Ramos had received an 11-year prison sentence; Compean had received a 12-year term. They began serving their sentences in January 2007.

As George W. Bush spends his final days in office, a national poll suggests that two-thirds of Americans see his presidency as a failure.

Sixty-eight percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Sunday said that Bush’s eight years in the White House were a failure, with 44 percent saying this was because of his personal shortcomings and 22 percent blaming the failure on circumstances beyond his control.
Thirty-one percent said they consider Bush’s presidency a success.
