The world needs a "global New Deal" to haul it out of the economic crisis it faces, Prime Minister Gordon Brown of the United Kingdom said Sunday.

"We need a global New Deal — a grand bargain between the countries and continents of this world — so that the world economy can not only recover but… so the banking system can be based on… best principles," he said, referring to the 1930s American plan to fight the Great Depression.
Brown was speaking as the leaders of Europe’s biggest economies met to try to forge a common position on the global financial crisis ahead of a major summit in London in April.

George Obama was arrested in Kenya on a charge for possession of marijuana, according to police.Obama’s half brother arrested on charge of marijuana possession
George Obama, the half brother of U.S. President Barack Obama, has been arrested by Kenyan police on a charge of possession of marijuana, police said Saturday.

Inspector Augustine Mutembei, the officer in charge, said Obama was arrested on charges of possession of cannabis, known in Kenya as Bhang, and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday, Mutembei said.
He is being held at Huruma police post in the capital of Nairobi.

Now, cutting through the bull, and to hear President Obama talk, that’s exactly what he is vowing to do. He announced Wednesday what he called a new era of openness.

President Obama: "The way to make government responsible is to hold it accountable and the way to make government accountable is to make it transparent. I will also hold myself to a new standard of openness."
Sounds good to us as long as President Obama really means it, and frankly we’re a little gun-shy, given how transparency was viewed by the previous administration.

Inauguration Day dawned Tuesday in Washington with no major security problems, but authorities are reviewing an unspecified threat to disrupt the inauguration of Barack Obama as the nation’s 44th president.

The FBI is investigating two "streams of intelligence" suggesting the "Somalia-based terrorist organization Al Shabaab" may be plotting an attack timed to coincide with the event Tuesday, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security said in a joint threat advisory obtained by CNN.
Security officials have made some readjustments to inauguration security as a precaution, but have not changed the threat level, an administration official told CNN.
