As the sun set in Chile on Saturday, a picture of the immense structural damage wrought by an early morning earthquake had come clearly into focus, with the nation’s president estimating that 2 million people had been affected in some way.

8.8-magnitude Quake Rocks Chile ?

SANTIAGO, Chile â€” A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake capable of tremendous damage struck central Chile early Saturday, shaking the capital for a minute and half and setting off a tsunami.

Buildings collapsed and phone lines and electricity were down, making the extent of the damage difficult to determine. According to Reuters, President Michelle Bachelet said six people were killed and that more deaths were possible.

The quake hit 200 miles southwest of the capital, Santiago, and at a depth of 22 miles at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT; 1:34 a.m. EST), the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Its epicenter was just 70 miles from Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio river, and 60 miles from the ski town of Chillan, a gateway to Andean ski resorts that was destroyed in a 1939 earthquake.

Buildings shook and collapsed in Santiago. With phone lines down, confirmation of damage was difficult elsewhere, especially further south toward the epicenter. The quake was felt in Argentina as well.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Chile and Peru, and a less-urgent tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica.

"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts," the center said.

The U.S. west coast tsunami warning center said it did not expect a tsunami along the west of the U.S. or Canada but was continuing to monitor the situation.

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the west coast of the United States.

This is terrible, the world are bad, maybe there are more than 20 000 people killed, now, we do not know, because the phone lines and electricity are out. But after, maybe we will have a suprise.

JN: I just want the traveling public to feel safe and confident in air travel, because as soon as we found out a plane almost go blown up, the system worked perfectly in the way we reacted to this event after it happened.

CNN: If the system worked so well, how did it happen in the first place?

JN: Ummmmm. I dunno. We're trying to figure that out ourselves.

CNN: I'm not allowed to get on the plane with too much toothpaste. How did he get on board with explosives?

JN: Hey, it was only one suicide bomber. Give us a break.

CNN: Ya, but it only takes one.

JN: Well, let's not focus on that, let's focus on the magnificent job our people did in responding to it.

CNN: If he was on a list of suspected terrorists, why wasn't he checked more carefully to find the explosives in his pants?

JN: Well, we have to be very careful how credible information is before we start barring people from air travel. Remember, these security procedures have been in place for years (Bush did it), and it's not like we PANICKED (eyeroll) and shut down all air travel (like Bush did).

CNN: I'm going to be sick.

Napolitano concedes airline security system failed
"A day after saying the system worked, Napolitano backtracked, saying her words had been taken out of context.

"Our system did not work in this instance," she said on NBC's "Today" show. "No one is happy or satisfied with that. An extensive review is under way."

"The White House press office, traveling with President Barack Obama in Hawaii, said early Monday that the president would make a statement from the Kaneoho Marine Base in the morning. White House spokesman Bill Burton did not elaborate.

"Billions of dollars have been spent on aviation security since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when commercial airliners were hijacked and used as weapons. Much of that money has gone toward training and equipment that some security experts say could have detected the explosive device that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is accused of hiding on his body on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit."

Aaah, the favorite Democrat defense. Her words were "taken out of context."
