Darkness fell across parts of China and India on Wednesday morning as a total solar eclipse passed across the world’s most populous countries, bringing throngs of people outside to watch the phenomenon.

Total eclipses occur about twice a year as the moon passes between the Earth and the sun on the same plane as Earth’s orbit. Wednesday’s event will be the longest of the 21st century, with astronomers predicting it will last more than six minutes.

Moon Nasa Future | Moon or Mars? ‘Next giant leap’ sparks debate

NASA is eyeing the moon's heavily cratered south pole as a place to send astronauts for the next lunar mission.Moon or Mars? ‘Next giant leap’ sparks debate
Blasting off from Earth and hurtling through space at thousands of miles an hour, it takes astronauts three days to reach the moon — a tiny distance in a universe measured in light years, but a fantastic voyage on a human scale.

Now plans are under way to go back, even as the future of U.S. human space exploration is under close scrutiny and pressure is growing on NASA to aim for another alien world.
It’s a crossroads Neil Armstrong could have hardly imagined on July 20, 1969, when he became the first human to set foot on the moon and uttered his now famous phrase: "That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Bob Greene says a small town in Ohio is one of the most inspiring places in the United States.Commentary: A giant leap from Ohio
All over the world this weekend, people are peering up into the night, trying to catch a glimpse of a sliver of the moon.

They’re thinking about the moon because of Monday’s 40-year anniversary of mankind’s first lunar landing. And more than a few people are undoubtedly allowing themselves to dream of traveling to the moon themselves.
It’s not going to happen. For almost all of us, it can be said with certainty:

Friday perfect for dancing in the moonlight

NASA says the moon will appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter.Friday perfect for dancing in the moonlight
It won’t be your imagination if the moon looks bigger and brighter Friday night, like "a cosmic flood lamp."

Every few years, a full moon coincides with the point in the satellite’s elliptical orbit that brings it closest to the center of the Earth. Friday night, the moon will be fully illuminated just four hours after reaching that point, according to a feature story on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Web site.
The moon will appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than "lesser full moons we’ve seen earlier in 2008," NASA says — provided it is being viewed in a clear sky.
