Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich returned to work Wednesday, a day after his arrest on federal corruption charges related in part to the selection of a successor to Barack Obama’s former Senate seat.

Blagojevich arrived at his office in a dark sport utility vehicle around 9:30 a.m. CT (10:30 a.m. ET).
The governor appeared before a federal magistrate Tuesday afternoon, hours after FBI agents went to his house on Chicago’s North Side and arrested him.

Why Is Illinois Governor Blagojevich Going To Jail?


He was a very hardworking Illinois Governor who wanted the best for the state of Illinois.

Just because he said a few jokes on the phone about selling a Senate seat, he goes to jail???? Why did they wiretap the guy. He didn't do anything wrong.

Explain this.
In Slavic countries, selling a Senate seat to a highest bidder is not a bad thing you know. It's a governor's choice.

Illinois lawmakers were quickly moving to take the decision of who will replace President-elect Barack Obama in the Senate out of the hands of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The 17th Amendment to the Constitution allows governors to fill vacant Senate seats, but politicians from both sides of the aisle have said it would be unacceptable for Blagojevich to choose Obama’s successor.
"No appointment by this governor under these circumstances could produce a credible replacement," said Sen. Dick Durbin, Illinois’ sole senator at the moment. Blagojevich was arrested Tuesday on federal conspiracy charges.

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich reportedly is planning to return to work Wednesday, a day after his indictment on federal corruption charges.

The Democrat appeared in court Tuesday afternoon to hear federal corruption charges against him and was released on $4,500 bail.
"He’s sad, surprised and innocent," Blagojevich attorney Sheldon Sorosky told reporters Tuesday night.

A grand jury Tuesday indicted three New York police officers on charges related to the alleged sodomy of a man on a Brooklyn subway platform in October.

The indictments came after two other officers told the grand jury they saw Officer Richard Kern assault 24-year-old Michael Mineo with a police baton in October, authorities said.
"I think that both officers who stepped forward acted in a responsible, if not a heroic, way," Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes said Tuesday. "I think both of them deserve a great deal of praise for doing that."

The U.S. Marine Corps knew of the threat posed by roadside bombs before the start of the Iraq war, yet did nothing to buy protective vehicles for troops, according to a report to be released by the Pentagon.

Additionally, Marine leaders in 2005 decided to buy up-armored, or reinforced, Humvees instead of Mine Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicles to shield troops in Iraq from mines and other explosives — a decision that could have cost lives, according to the report obtained Tuesday by CNN.
The report by the Department of Defense inspector general was requested by the Marine Corps in early 2008 after a civilian employee with the service complained that bureaucratic delays undermined the program to develop the armored vehicles.
