"The unilateral embargo on Cuba has failed to achieve its stated purpose," Sen. Richard Lugar writes in a letter.Key GOP senator calls Cuba embargo ineffective
Sen. Richard Lugar, the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released a draft report Monday saying it is time to reconsider longtime U.S. economic sanctions on Cuba.

"After 47 years … the unilateral embargo on Cuba has failed to achieve its stated purpose of ‘bringing democracy to the Cuban people,’ " Lugar, R-Indiana, wrote in a letter that accompanied the report.
"The current U.S. policy has many passionate defenders, and their criticism of the Castro regime is justified. Nevertheless, we must recognize the ineffectiveness of our current policy and deal with the Cuban regime in a way that enhances U.S. interests."

John Kerry says Barack Obama sent a message that fight against terror will respect America's values.Commentary: Torture weakened America’s national security
Thursday was an important day for the rule of law in the United States of America.

With a handful of signatures to executive orders, President Obama ordered the eventual closure of Guantanamo Bay prison and CIA "black site" prisons, and placed interrogation in all American facilities by all U.S. personnel under the guidelines of the Army Field Manual.
In a season of transformational changes, these are among the most meaningful, because they send a powerful message that America’s struggle against terrorism will once against honor some of the most cherished ideals of our republic: respect for the rule of law, individual rights, and America’s moral leadership.

Sen. Hillary Clinton testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as her daughter, Chelsea, looks on.Clinton calls withdrawal of troops from Iraq ‘top priority’
Sen. Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq would be a "top priority" of President-elect Barack Obama’s administration.

Clinton’s comments came as she appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for her confirmation hearing for the position of secretary of state.
During her testimony, Clinton said the withdrawal would occur "in the context of the status of forces agreement" that the Bush administration recently signed with the Iraqi government that requires the removal of U.S. combat troops by 2011.
