A poll shows approval of President Obama slipping, but most of the loss of support is among Republicans.Poll: Obama rating slips, but still high
A national poll indicates that two out of three Americans approve of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as president of the United States.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey, released Friday, also suggests that six in 10 support the economic stimulus package that Obama signed into law Tuesday.
Obama’s approval rating stands at 67 percent in the new poll. That’s down 9 percentage points from the most recent CNN poll, which was conducted in early February. But a breakdown by party suggests that the drop doesn’t mean that the new president is in serious trouble.

A New York Post cartoon has sparked a debate over race and cartooning this week.New York Post apologizes for, yet still defends, chimp cartoon
A day after publishing a cartoon that drew fire from critics who said it evoked historically racist images, the New York Post apologized in a statement on its Web site — even as it defended its action and blasted some detractors.

Many of those critical of the cartoon said it appeared to compare President Barack Obama to a chimpanzee in a commentary on his recently approved economic stimulus package.
"Wednesday’s Page Six cartoon — caricaturing Monday’s police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut — has created considerable controversy," the paper said about the drawing, which shows two police officers standing over the body of a chimpanzee they just shot.

Stimulus Pay Amendment | Stimulus amendment puts tough limits on executive pay

Sen. Chris Dodd's amendment will affect more executives than previously anticipated, financial analysts say.Stimulus amendment puts tough limits on executive pay
An amendment in the $787 billion economic stimulus package passed by Congress Friday would severely restrict bonuses and other forms of compensation for top executives at companies receiving federal bailout money.

The amendment by Sen. Chris Dodd, chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, would impose wide-ranging restrictions on how — and by how much — top executives at companies receiving federal bailout money can be compensated.
The measure would cap bonuses — already often far more lucrative than base salaries for top executives — and could require executives at companies that have already received bailout money to pay back some of their compensation if it exceeded certain limits.

Stimulus Bill Senate | Senators meeting to scrub spending from stimulus bill

President Obama wants to sign the stimulus bill by Presidents Day.Senators meeting to scrub spending from stimulus bill
A bipartisan group of senators is meeting Thursday to try to forge a compromise on an amendment to cut some spending from the proposed stimulus bill.

What happens in the meeting could determine whether President Obama’s stimulus bill goes to a vote in the Senate. The president will need at least some Republican support in order to get the 60 votes needed to bring the bill before the full Senate.
The Senate has 56 Democrats and two Independents who usually vote with them. There are 41 Republicans.

WHY DOES THE Senate Stimulus Bill Provide 300,000 Jobs For Illegal Immigrants IS THIS EVEN LEGAL ?

If enacted, the Senate stimulus bill would fund over $100 billion in new government construction projects with the goal of providing additional jobs to unemployed Americans. The House-passed stimulus bill contains explicit language to bar employment of illegal immigrants in these construction projects. However, the Senate bill deliberately omits this language.

If the Senate version of the bill becomes law, a great number of the workers employed in government construction programs will, in fact, be illegal immigrants. About one out of seven (or 15 percent) of workers employed in construction in the U.S. is an illegal immigrant.[1] Unless strong mechanisms are put in place to prevent the hiring of illegal immigrants, it is reasonable to expect that a similar proportion of workers hired for construction projects under the stimulus bill would be in the country illegally.

Construction Funding and Employment of Illegal Immigrants

The Senate stimulus bill would provide roughly $104 billion in funding for a variety of construction projects including highways, schools, and renovation of public housing. This funding will be spread over five to seven years. Normal government estimates indicate that each $1 billion spent on construction will create around 19,500 construction jobs, each lasting a year.[2] Thus $104 billion in funding in construction projects would ostensibly create construction-related jobs for about 2.04 million workers over several years. Without specific mechanisms to ensure that workers are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants authorized to work, it is likely that 15 percent of these workers, or 300,000, would be illegal immigrants. The stimulus bill currently being debated in the Senate deliberately omits the E-Verify provision from the House bill. Later this week, Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) will introduce an amendment to include the House E-Verify language in the Senate bill. However, if the current Senate bill were to become law without language requiring contractor use of E-Verify, the inevitable result would be billions in federal funds spent to employ illegal immigrants.
