The European Union will launch its first naval operation Tuesday, protecting vessels from pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia, EU policy chief Javier Solana announced Monday.

EU foreign ministers approved the mission during their regular meeting in Brussels on Monday. Solana said the operation is "very important" because EU vessels will be operating "in a place in the world that everybody’s looking at because of the new problems related to piracy."
"It’s very important that we have taken that decision to launch it tomorrow," he added.

Why Not Fight The Pirates In Somalia And Not Just The Militants.?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070602/ap_on_re_af/somalia_us

An average of two ships is fired upon or hijacked by pirates in the Somali waters. The US warships can intercept them and destroy them. Why is it easier to fire at "Muslim Militants", in rural Somalia but not fight the pirates in the sea,

Three British security guards board a helicopter to be transferred to a Royal Navy vessel.Three escape pirate-hijacked tanker
Three British guards jumped overboard and were rescued from the water after battling in vain to prevent pirates hijacking a chemical tanker off the coast of Somalia.

The Liberian-flagged Biscaglia came under "sustained and heavy attack" early Friday morning, Nick Davis, Director of Anti-Piracy Maritime Security Solutions (APMSS), said in a statement.
The three APMSS-employed security guards — all former British servicemen — mounted "sustained non-lethal resistance" but were unable to stop the attackers seizing control of the ship, Davis said.

Why Is This Story About Somalia Pirates Falling Ill Aboard Hijacked Iranian Tanker Not Big News?

Some of them suffered skin burns and their hair was falling out and some died! I bet we won't hear about this until after the election. Sounds like radiation sickness to me. What say you? Please read.

This is the part that really grabbed my attention.

The MV Iran Deyanat was brought to Eyl, a sleepy fishing village in northeastern Somalia, and was secured by a larger gang of pirates – 50 onboard and 50 onshore. Within days, pirates who had boarded the ship developed strange health complications, skin burns and loss of hair. Independent sources tell The Long War Journal that a number of pirates have also died. "Yes, some of them have died. I do not know exactly how many but the information that I am getting is that some of them have died," Andrew Mwangura, Director of the East African Seafarers' Assistance Program, said Friday when reached by phone in Mombasa.

Pirates have released a Yemeni cargo ship without receiving a ransom after negotiations with local elders, a Somali official said Wednesday.

Aliabdi Aware, a minister in the semi-autonomous northern region of Puntland, said the ship was awaiting refueling in Eyl, a fishing village in the region. The crew and the ship were safe, he said.
It was not immediately known how much ransom the pirates had demanded. Aware said hijackers let the ship go after elders intervened and negotiated for the crew members’ release.

In Another Attempted Hijacking Off The Coast Of Somalia, Two Pirates Are Shot Dead Throught A Joint Effort?

between Russian and British forces. What happens to the rest of the pirates that have been captured? I thought I read previously that because there is no effective government in Somalia to prosecute pirates that they are usually just released. If that is the case, isn't it better to fight the pirates to death than capture them?
manthebraces – what is your source for this answer?
desertviking – the French? and their whereabouts is unknown?
ba_wa_jo – these pirates from Somalia are hijacking ships for the ransom money. They have been successful in the past so they continue to do it.
PJJ – the justice system in Somalia? It doesn't really exist as far as I can tell.
oxo_07 – I think I understand your message but am not sure.

Nautica in Sydney HarborLuxury cruise ship outruns pirates
A 30,000-ton luxury cruise ship outran pirates off the coast of Yemen this weekend, the ship’s owner said Monday.

The Nautica was in an area patrolled by international anti-piracy task forces when two small skiffs appeared to try to intercept it, Oceania spokesman Tim Rubacky said.
The ship took evasive maneuvers and accelerated to its full speed of 23 knots or 27 mph. One of the smaller craft closed to within 300 yards and fired eight rifle shots at the cruise ship, he said, but the ship was able to pull away.

Who Would Like To Be A Crew Member Of My Party Cruise Pirate Ship?

I have this great idea of raising money to buy a cruise ship and then having all the people that donated the money come aboard and become pirates with me. We could go around the world picking up other partiers and looting areas that have party supplies or maybe just pick up more people and charge them money to hang out with us so we can legally buy party supplies. I even thought that we could have some system of goverment too, all democratic like. There would be different bars on the cruise ship with different themes. A rave bar, a rock bar, a rap bar, a country western bar, a alternative rock bar etc…, The people that frequent any one of these bars could elect senators and other goverment officials from that bar and people could vote on fresh new ideas for new missions.

Can The Un Help With The Cholera Crises In Zimbabwe ?

Cholera aggravates Zimbabwe collapse
Tue, 11/25/2008 – 2:18pm
Imagine living in a country with 231 million percent inflation, a failed power-sharing agreement, closing schools and hospitals, and an astronomical emigration rate of refugees into neighboring South Africa.

Now, add a cholera epidemic that has left more than 300 people dead and thousands more sick. And President Robert Mugabe, instead of ending the crisis, seems to be using it as an "excuse to clamp down on everyday life," according to SW Radio Africa.

Power sharing talks were set to reconvene today under former South Africa President Thabo Mbeki's mediation, but serious disputes remain about the allocation of ministries between President Robert Mugabe and his opposition-party prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai. In a sign of his unwillingness to yield power, Mugabe accussed a delegation of "elders," including Jimmy Carter, Kofi Annan, and Graça Machel (the former wife of Nelson Mandela) of trying to oust his government. He refused them entry to the crippled country.

But after everything else, it might be cholera that pushes the limits of how far failed this failed-state can go. South Africa is doing its best to keep the cholera on one side of the border, but further collapse could send an flood of refugees where there has always been a trickle. That would further destabilize a politically shaky South Africa in the midst of its presidential transition.

It's time to change our rhetorical terms on Zimbabwe. No longer on the brink of collapse: over the edge
